For lipstick lovers, it’s always exciting whenever there’s a new lip shade from Tom Ford on the market—the high-end formula is the best of the best. This bright and bold pink shade has blue undertones, making it perfect for all seasons, from the end of summer through the dark days of winter. However, there’s one caveat: the name of the lipstick is Pussy Power.

What to make of this provocative new name? One could see it as an empowering declaration of femininity or find it offensive and crass. Does the fact that this is a man’s beauty brand make the name Pussy Power objectifying? We definitely see both sides of the argument. On one hand, the sentiment seems to be a sincere celebration of women. But it could also be a weak attempt to jump on the commercialization of female empowerment bandwagon.

You might recall that at Tom Ford’s NYFW show in February, models walked down the runway sporting bejeweled bags emblazoned with the words “Pussy Power.” No doubt this was the inspiration for this sultry new shade. At the time reviews were mixed, with some of Ford’s sharpest critics questioning his taste level and wondering if he’d lost his edge.

Could this similarly monikered lipstick be Tom Ford’s attempt to reclaim this phrase and throw critics’ contempt back in their faces? Is this even his phrase to reclaim? We can only speculate as to Ford’s motivations, but there’s no question that this is a gorgeous lipstick. The flattering hue will look good on all skin tones, and don’t get us started on that creamy texture.

So we have to ask: would the name stop you from wearing this new lipstick?

It not, you can pick up Tom Ford’s Lip Color Satin Matte Lipstick in Pussy Power now.

Whether you add this to your lip repertoire or not, the shade is something to discuss as issues of female empowerment and commercialization continue to come to the forefront.
