How to wash your face at night vs. how to wash your face in the morning
Beauty rituals take up more time in our days than we might realize. We usually fly through our routines because we’re so busy, but it pays to take a closer look and figure out whether we’re doing them the right way. How you wash your face is a particular routine that deserves a lot of attention, because it sets the tone for how your skin will look and feel long run, as well as how it appears in the short term.
If you’re anything like average folks, you’re probably washing your face twice a day — once in the morning and once at night. But you could be getting it all wrong. While everyone should be washing their face at night before they hit the hay, whether you need to cleanse your face with a product in the a.m. depends entirely on what type of skin you’ve got.
Do you have dry skin?
If you’re a dry, sensitive type, skip out on the cleanser in the morning. Stick to a splash of warm water and you should be good to go.
Do you have really oily skin?
You may want to consider washing in the morning with a gentle cleanser. No matter what, just keep in mind that over-washing actually leads to irritation and breakouts. So if you feel like your skin is being overloaded with touch and products, stick to a simple rinse in the morning. Dermatologist Ranella Hirsch confirms to Allure that this is a good rule to live by.
“There’s really no reason to wash your face in the morning, especially if you thoroughly cleansed the night before. But, at the same time, there’s nothing wrong with cleansing the face every morning, as long as you’re not overstripping the skin with harsh, drying cleansers. It’s just a matter of personal preference.”
There is ONE face-washing rule you should always follow, though.
When it comes to evening routines, on the other hand, the rule is to never skip out on washing your face — and washing off your day. This ritual takes a little bit more effort, though. In other words, how you clean your face matters. First of all, make sure your hands are clean and the water is warm, not scalding hot. Dermatologists then insist that you actually remove your makeup with a makeup remover before you just apply cleanser. Sometimes those cleansers we use don’t get all that foundation and mascara off. Don’t use an exfoliating product more than once or twice a week, use as gentle a product as you possibly can, and wipe off with a clean, fresh towel. Then apply your toner, serum, moisturizer, etc. Whatever floats your boat.
Phew, sounds like a lot to think about! But it will all come naturally and very effortlessly as soon as you lock in the routine. Besides, treating your face well is totally worth it. And it just feels nice.
