9 body parts you probably forget about when applying sunscreen
As we slowly creep towards the warm and sunny months, it’s a great time to start stocking up on sunscreen so you aren’t caught in a bind on a blazing hot day when all you want to do is hit the park without hindrance. Having your sunscreen ready to go makes it much easier to toss in your bag and keep your skin nice and safe from the sun’s harmful rays.
But even once you’ve got your sunscreen packed away and you’ve slapped it on all the usual zones, you can still miss some key body parts that are especially vulnerable to the sun.
We’re used to just putting sunscreen on our face, shoulders, and arms. That only covers the tip of the iceberg, though. Skin cancer is pervasive and sneaky. If you consistently forget even one spot on your body, you’re at risk. Yes, this may be slightly alarmist, but we’d rather get you to be meticulous about your sunscreen application than risk getting sick. You want to make sure that every nook and cranny is covered in sunscreen so as to not risk letting the sun’s pernicious rays touch your beautiful skin!
1The tops of your feet
Don’t stop at your ankles when spreading sunscreen down your legs. Your feet are constantly exposed during sandal-loving summers, so make sure you remember to give them some SPF love.
2The back of your hands
The soft skin on the back of your hands is especially vulnerable to the sun’s rays. They need to get some sunscreen love.
3In between your fingers
The delicate webbing between your fingers is usually hidden, but why risk exposure if you’re already spreading that sunscreen all around?
4The back of your neck
Lift up that hair and get it all up in there, including along the hairline!
Our tender little ears are an often-neglected spot that is incredibly easy to burn. Make sure you work that sunscreen into them, too.
6Behind your knees
Yes, sweaty back-of-knees are pretty gross, so putting sunscreen on them can seem unappealing, but there are few things more painful than a burn on a place that constantly bends.
7Your under-butt crease
We’ve all had those red sunburn welts where our bum meets the back of our thighs, so make sure you lift those cheeks and get them nice and good! Then give yourself a booty-pat for all your hard work.
8The bottom of your feet
If you’re flipping over onto your belly while laying out then you better be getting the bottom of your feet, too. This is an especially overlooked area that is actually delicate and very susceptible to the sun’s rays.
Find a chapstick or lip product with SPF like the Supergoop Fusion Lip Balm with Shea Butter, $9.50, so you don’t worry about burning your lips.
Remember, being thorough is your best defense against sun damage of any kind, and whether your motivation behind fastidious sunscreen application be vanity or health reasons, don’t forget all those itty bitty spots that get lost in the shuffle. Your precious skin will thank you!
