OUAI's newest hair product will give your scalp the detox it needs
Jen Atkin, the longtime hairstylist for A-list celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen, just released the newest offering from her hair brand, OUAI. Detox Shampoo is an apple cider vinegar (ACV)-based product that works as a toner for your scalp to deeply cleanse it of dirt, oil, and impurities. Also, it eliminates product buildup you may still have in your hair (like leftover dry shampoo) and copper that may be lingering in it if you live in a place that deposits hard water. If your hair has been feeling dull, flat, and lifeless, this product could be the solution.
If you have questions about apple cider vinegar and if it’s right for you, Atkin is here with answers.
HelloGiggles: How often should you use an ACV-based hair product, like Detox Shampoo?
Jen Atkin: It depends on how much your hair needs a deeper cleanse. We’ve noticed on average, people could use a detox once or twice a week depending on a few variables: your environment, hormones, natural hair type, how much product you layer in day to day when you style, and even what kind of water you have in your shower. It varies from person to person, so we try to do our best to educate everyone to navigate on their own a little. How does your hair feel when you run your hands through? Do you need to social distance yourself from dry shampoo for a minute? Is your hair especially oily? Just start asking yourself some questions, and you’ll be able to track your own rhythm with it.
HG: How do you know if you need to give your scalp a detox? What are the signs?
JA: It’s kind of gross, but we suggest doing a little scalp test. If you see a lot of gunk underneath your nail when you scratch your head or feel around at the root, then you’re definitely due for a detox. If you know you’ve been using a lot of extra product lately and haven’t really given your hair a break to breathe on its own, it’s probably time.
HG: How does ACV work to make hair shiny?
JA: ACV works to balance our hair and scalp pH, which helps it restore its natural shine and bounce. It’s a great clarifier when you need a natural route to exfoliation, and helps remove residue and build-up.
HG: How much Detox Shampoo do you need to use for results?
JA: Honestly, it’s different for everyone. My girls with fine hair might need a little less than my girls with thick curls. Maybe start with a quarter-size amount on your hand and see if that works into a lather that feels right for you. You can always add more, or put in less the next time around.
