Buying an expensive cleanser can feel like you're literally watching your hard-earned cash go down the drain. Yes, it's true face washes only stay on your skin for two minutes tops, so buying a fancy one may seem frivolous. However, using a product that's harsh and stripping is a surefire way to set off acne and dryness—my two main skincare concerns.

After a lot of trial-and-error, I now have a handful of go-to cleansers I rotate through, including Naturopatica's Manuka Honey Cleansing Balm. The oil-based balm is rich and formulated to keep the skin's microbiome balanced.

To briefly take you back to your high school biology class, the skin's microbiome is a collection of microorganisms, mostly made up of bacteria, that works to protect and keep the skin barrier intact. When the microbiome is off-balance, conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis can flare up.

OK, science lesson over. Circling back to the actual cleanser, the balm's hero ingredient is manuka honey, which clarifies the skin and has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that can help calm acne. Along with a barrier-reinforcing probiotic, peptides, shea butter, and jojoba round out the mix by nourishing and toning the skin. There's also a handful of plant-derived extracts that give it a calming, spa-like scent.

A jar of this balm will set you back $62, but even though I know it's cliché to say it, a little does really go a long way since it's so thick. I use the balm as the first step in my double cleanse. I massage it onto my dry face, rinse it off, and then go over my face again with a wet wash cloth to make sure all of the balm is gone.

Thanks to the honey, the balm gives my skin that fresh just-applied-moisturizer feeling. I also don't experience any redness, despite there being some fragrant ingredients in the formula. And even though the balm makes my skin super soft, I still go in with a water-based cleanser to ensure my skin is completely clean, followed by the rest of the products in my regular skincare routine.

Now, I look forward to washing my face every night.
