I took bareMinerals' new custom shade foundation for an all-day test-run in 85-degree weather

Fun fact: When I first started wearing makeup in 8th grade, my mom bought me a bareMinerals starter kit. From then on, I’ve been a devoted bareMinerals fan. So when I learned that the cosmetics brand was changing the makeup game with personalized foundation and an innovative app, I knew I had to try it out.

I was lucky enough to attend a press event, where I learned how to use the Made-2-Fit app — and not to get all nerdy, but the app uses MATCHCo technology, which scans and analyzes your skin tone to create a custom foundation. As for the foundation? It’s meant for all skin types and is infused with good-for-you ingredients like White Lily Extract and Green Tea Extract (which provide nourishing skin benefits for a healthy-looking appearance).

Being the beauty lover that I am, I downloaded the app and documented the foundation all day long to see how it would *actually* work. I want to add that while I did receive this product for free, my review of the foundation is 100 percent honest.

Let’s dive into the review, shall we?

The Made-2-Fit app in action.

This is probably common sense, but when using the app, you should make sure your skin is as close to a normal state as possible. If you have a sunburn, breakouts, or skin irritation, it could affect the outcome of the foundation match. You’ll also want to create a bareMinerals account — this will save you time at checkout.

Here’s what you’ll need in order to use the app: indoor lighting, an iPhone 5S or greater, five sheets of white paper to calibrate the camera, and your gorgeous makeup-free face.

Now to the fun part.

Once you’re done calibrating the camera with white paper, hold the phone to your wrist to get a reading of your skin tone. After, tap the phone to your face — first, on the right side of your cheek and jawline and then move on to the left side. You’ll definitely feel silly tapping your phone to your face, but just enjoy the ride.

Look how gorgeous that bottle looks!

I want to point out that I have dry skin with some oily areas around my nose, inner cheek, and chin area. The bareMinerals site says this foundation is great for all skin types, but I think it’s important to know what kind of skin I have to get an understanding of how the foundation works on me.

Holding up the foundation to my face — let’s hope this is a perfect match!

My initial thought when I saw the bareMinerals foundation was that it looked a lot more yellow than my tried-and-true foundations. I normally use Urban Decay’s Naked foundation in Color 1 and the It Cosmetics CC Cream in Fair, but nonetheless, I was intrigued to give the bareMinerals one a whirl.

It’s 10:45 a.m. and this is how the foundation looks alone and with a full face of makeup.

You can see that the foundation really matched my neck in the left photo (in that picture, I only had the foundation on). In the right photo, I did apply a bit of contour, but you can still see that the foundation matches my skin.

While I love how weightless it feels, it’s a light coverage foundation — you can see the redness around my nose peek through. However, I like that it didn’t hide my beauty marks. My makeup looks natural and it’s glowing. So far, so good.

It’s 1:45 p.m. and this is what the foundation looks like after three hours of wear.

I was out running errands, grabbing lunch, and hanging out with my fiancé for about three hours (before I went back home) — and I’m super surprised that the foundation held up in this 85-degree heat. While you can see that the foundation caked a bit around my nose area (I was cursed with really big pores there), my makeup still looks flawless.

It’s 6:45 p.m. and this is what my foundation looks like after five hours.

So at this time, the only touch-ups I did were to apply more mascara and lipstick. But look at my foundation! While you can see a bit of separation and cakiness near my nose and inner cheek area, I am so impressed.

From far away, my face makeup looks incredible — which is a win in my book!

It’s 10:45 p.m., and it’s time to wipe it off!

By this point, I am ready to scrub off my makeup. You can see that my makeup doesn’t look that bad! While there’s hardly any makeup on my nose (and the middle of my chin), I am actually surprised to see how good it looks.

Here’s the thing — most of my foundations are non-existent by the time I’m ready for bed. They gets so cakey that I have to wipe them off, or it’s so hot out that I sweat them off. So I’m shocked to see that the bareMinerals foundation holds up.

My final thoughts.

Alyssa Morin / HelloGiggles

I honestly didn’t expect to like the foundation. I thought that since so much went into the technology (aka the app) and the Instagram-worthy customization (aka your name on the foundation), the product wouldn’t have gotten as much attention. But I was SO wrong!

I am pleasantly surprised that this foundation not only matches my skin perfectly (who knew I had so much yellow in my skin tone considering that I have a lot of redness!), but it also lasts through the LA heat. I also love how lightweight it feels and how natural it looks.

I can definitely see this being my new everyday foundation — especially on days when I want to look put together but I don’t feel like being dolled up. Will I buy this foundation once I run out? If it means looking flawless all day long, hells yes. Plus, having my name on this luxe bottle makes me feel like a fancy bitch.
