It’s time for me to make a confession, and it’s going to sound a bit strange coming from a beauty writer, but I’ve never been much of a lipstick girl. Almost every time I’ve attempted a lipstick beyond nude, I’ve felt a bit uneasy about how stark the color looks against my fair skin tone and how the product felt on my lips. This uneasiness resulted in constant glances in the mirror or into my phone to check my appearance. So, I stuck with what I felt comfortable wearing — usually a lip tint or stain applied sparingly to the center of the lips and blended out. That is, until, I found the lipstick that changed everything! Or everything lip-related, at least.

I recently tried an incredible, nature-approved lipstick line called Kosas, and I’ve been reaching for their colors constantly!

The collection contains eight shades of reds, plums, nudes, and roses — which are all handmade in LA and designed to be universally flattering.

My first qualm was with the notion that anything could be universally flattering. Up to this point, despite having tried tons of lipsticks, I’ve yet to find more than a handful that are actually even kind of flattering. But after trying Kosas’ full range, I can honestly say I felt pretty darn good in every one of them!

I was also concerned that their shades might only be visible on fair to medium skin tones, because it’s very rare to find a natural lipstick pigmented enough to show up on deeper skin. But if the models on their website say anything, it’s that these hues look vibrant and beautiful on the full range of humans.

Beyond the beautiful range of hues in sleek black tubes, are quality natural formulas made of ingredients I don’t feel concerned about putting on my mouth.

Although the jury’s still out on how much lipstick the average woman ingests in her lifetime, it never hurts to try to steer clear of ingredients you’d rather not have wind up inside of you. All of Kosas’s lipsticks contain a blend of green tea, rosehip, and grapeseed oil, which the brand notes have “powerful antioxidants that heal cells and fight free radicals,” as well as mango butter, shea butter, and sweet orange oil to protect and nourish the lips.

The first two ingredients are castor seed oil and caprylic triglyceride, an emollient derived from coconut oil, which sounds more like the top line of a lip balm than a lipstick! The colors are also highly pigmented. This results in a product that provides a great deal of color with just a light layer, so it doesn’t feel heavy on the lips, and won’t look dry or crumbly. The full range is available on Kosas’s website, Revolve, and Shen for $24 dollars each.

If you’re wondering what they look like in action, read on for the full-on, face swatch session!

Rosewater

Ariane Collins

A cool, pink nude with a creamy finish.

Stardust

Ariane Collins

A warm, matte nude with hints of pink and brown. This is the only shade that applies a bit sheer, which creates a really natural, your lips but better look.

Undone

Ariane Collins

This is the first color Kosas created! A warm nude comprised of brown and pink hues, with a velvety semi-matte finish.

Royal

Ariane Collins

A sophisticated, berry hue that leans toward purple, with a creamy finish.

Fringe

Ariane Collins

A bold brick red that balances brown and red hues in a semi-matte finish.

Darkroom

Ariane Collins

A deep, semi-matte bordeaux.

Electra

Ariane Collins

A classic cool-toned red with a creamy finish.

Thrillest

Ariane Collins

A vibrant poppy red with hints of orange and a creamy finish. This shade leans toward tangerine.

When you move from one color to the next, the change appears subtle, but each shade is truly unique!

Choosing favorites was no easy task, but I think I’d be most likely to wear Stardust for everyday and Fringe or Electra for something special!
