Item of the Day: theSkimm
Are you all about that #skimmlife yet?
It’s rare for me to open any article I write with a hashtag but for theSkimm, it’s definitely necessary. For those of you not on the subscription list, theSkimm is a free daily (Monday-Friday) e-newsletter that gives you “everything you need to start your day” in terms of the breaking news you need to be on top of each morning.
But what makes theSkimm stand out and why do I open this single email first over the dozens of newsletters that have gathered up in my work inbox while I was sleeping?
1) Damn good subject headers.
When theSkimm gets emailed out, it hits your inbox early in the AM. Most mornings my preferred way to wake up is to get my dashboard scroll on with my iPhone to survey how many emails I’ve received. Only the ones with red flags or strong headers get priority attention and theSkimm definitely grabs at you with headers like “If you like Pina Coladas…” and “Got you chocolate and flowers. Inside.”
2) Need a quote of the day?
That’s the top priority before we break into the news portion of the newsletter. You never know who will grab a place for a sound bite either – could be Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) or Seth Rogen. (Both of which have been featured, btw.)
3) They stick to their motto.
“We read, you Skimm.” Excellent. Because in case you didn’t notice, there is a lot of information online flooding in every conceivable Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Tumblr dash round the clock, every hour, on the hour. And I didn’t even include listening to NPR or checking in on televised news. It’s really easy to feel like you’re missing out on dozens of breaking news stories constantly or that you might not be able to grasp the specific details of a dense article on closing levels for the day on NASDAQ.
theSkimm cuts it down and keeps it neat and to the point and conversational. I’m here for all of that. Gives me a little extra time to squeeze in a few funny Vines in the morning that way.
4) Oh, and that motto is well read.
If you’re looking for a recap of last night’s episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians or a bunch of maybe-true blind Hollywood items, theSkimm is probs not your go-to newsletter. But if you’re a working professional, driven and passionate about causes and taking the lead, and striving towards staying on your toes in all things news and buzzworthy, theSkimm is just your jam.
5) Want to go behind the scenes of a start-up? They’ve got a Tumblr for that.
Reading the newsletter alone I can feel just what the voice is behind theSkimm is like, but it’s on theSkimm’s Tumblr where a surprising second layer of that voice comes out of the fold. theSkimm is still very much a start-up and its journey is chronicled in a raw and honest tone, owning up to mistakes made, the reactions and panicking that occurred within, and the lessons learned at the end.
6) Did I tell you about their rad founders Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg?
I’ve saved the best reason for last – not only are Carly and Danielle smart, savvy ladies who both dug in their storytelling roots as producers for NBC News, they’re also committed and focused to the future of theSkimm and what that future can mean for readers everywhere.
I was lucky enough to get the chance to ask them what they loved about being on this team. For Danielle, her favorite thing about working on the newsletter is digging through stories to find ones that people that people will really care about. But her favorite part of theSkimm team is that there is one – the first employees are now on board and a company culture is being established.
For Carly, working with theSkimm team means new ideas and plenty of enthusiasm from new members on board. She also loves seeing the voice of the newsletter come alive. “People always ask if we get sick of writing but it’s really the best part of our day – having the luxury to sit on a couch with a friend and figure out how to make our readers’ lives easier and better each AM.”
