We all know the transformative powers that makeup can have. And while we’re used to obsessing over our own looks, we can also appreciate it when dudes totally NAIL a dark, smokey eye. In fact, some of our favorite male characters and musicians have pulled off the look so well in the past that we kinda envy them. Almost.

Here’s a look at some famous eyeliner-clad men (both characters and real people) with and without their signature  ~looks~. And while they all look equally good either way, it’s surprising to see how big a difference it makes for some of them!

Captain Hook on Once Upon a Time (Colin O’Donoghue).

Brandon Flowers, frontman of The Killers.

Guy of Gisborne on Robin Hood (Richard Armitage).

Brendon Urie, frontman of Panic! at the Disco.

Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones (Jason Momoa).

Matthew Healy, frontman of The 1975.

Adam Lambert, runner-up on Season 8 of American Idol.

Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise (Johnny Depp).

And finally, Gerard Way former frontman of your favorite 2000’s emo band My Chemical Romance.
