Welcome to The Beauty Files, where HelloGiggles editors and contributors share what exactly they put on their faces, and why. We want to take you on this voyeuristic journey because we believe makeup means something different for every single person — applying makeup is a conscious, intimate decision we make almost every single day, and there’s usually a method behind the madness. Join us every week as we spill the beans on beauty products, and feel free to submit your own Beauty File. E-mail us at pitches@hellogiggles.com!

When prepping to write this article, I dumped my (four) makeup bags in the center of the bed to sort through products. My boyfriend didn’t even look up. (I’m guessing he’s totally used to me rummaging through my makeup.) Somewhere between my first blue mascara in the ’90s and my 2017 resolution to commit to routines, I have amassed a huge beauty collection. My vanity holds a lot of duality, from classic reds to wild purple lipsticks, and budget beauty items to pricier products.

During the week, I work from home. This is where my makeup routine reflects vintage inspo, like sharp, cat-eye liner and nude lips. This is also where I research all the latest beauty launches and sales, which leads to even more collecting. On the weekends, I let myself experiment and be extra. This means glitter, and more glitter, and lashes. I’ve lived my entire life in Los Angeles, but I still love going out and exploring almost everyday. Whether it’s buzzworthy ice cream shops or underground speakeasies, there always seems to be an excuse to go out (and get made up)!

Here is my usual face.

And here is how my beauty routine looks throughout a typical day:

8:00 a.m., Morning Shower

I am basically a zombie until my coffee kicks in, so I shower in the meantime. I am obsessed with fall scents, so I stock up on body washes during the season. My current favorites are from Philosophy, Bath & Body Works, and Witch Baby Soap. I usually wash my face with Neutrogena Pore Refining Cleanser ($6.99).

I don’t wash my hair everyday, so I rely on the magic of dry shampoo. My current favorite is Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak ($4.99). Post-shower, I either use one of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab‘s scented oils (especially the Neil Gaiman’s Mad Sweeney, $26) or spritz on Kat Von D’s Saint perfume ($32).

10:00 a.m., Basic Face

I finally have a face makeup routine that is totally ~bulletproof~ for my skin.

I start with a high SPF moisturizer, like Neutrogena’s Healthy Defense ($15.99). Next I use my Holy Grail, aka Benefit’s POREfessional primer ($31). I recently switched foundations to Lancome’s Teint Idole Ultra 24 Hr Makeup ($47).

The best beauty advice I received in the last year is always blend wet! My EcoTools EcoFoam blenders ($9.99) were total game-changers for me. They work so well. As a beauty writer, I have tried out so many highlighters while following the trends, but my favorite is Essence Soo glow! cream to powder highlighter ($3.49).

Under my eyes, I use Wet n Wild’s Photofocus concealer ($3.99), then I set my entire face with E.L.F HD Powder ($5.49), which is a perfect dupe for Make Up For Ever’s, IMHO. My new ride-or-die contour is Sephora Colorful Contour ($14). On my brows I use Stila’s Stay All Day Brow pen in Dark ($21). I stick to bright eyeshadows to make me look more awake, and am fan of making my own Morphe palettes at their brick and mortar store. I finish the basic lewk with Rimmel Scandal Eyes Mascara in Extreme Black ($5.99). I apply various lip balms throughout the day. One of my current favorites is the Glamour Dolls Kitty Kisses Tinted Lip Balm in Meowter Space ($2.99), it’s a perfect rosy nude.

5:00 p.m., Happy Hour with Bae

This is the #blessed hour in which I don my liner and swipe on some lipstick.

I live in a very walkable part of LA, and it’s really cool to be in a neighborhood where the baristas remember your name. They even notice when I dye my hair! My favorite liquid liner is Physicians Formula Eye Booster in Ultra Black ($11.99), because the felt tip is really soft and flexible. This liner has a lash boosting serum that totally works! On my waterline, I like Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Perversion ($20). My go-to lip is a dusty rose and I love Kat Von D Everlasting lipsticks ($20) in Lovecraft and Bow N Arrow or ColourPop’s Tiny Chum, which was from their limited-edition Hello Kitty collab.

9:00 p.m., Nightly Skin Care

They say if you want your makeup to look great in the morning, prep your skin the night before.

I try to drink loads of water to combat my really dry, sensitive skin. At night, I remove my makeup with Simple Kind to Skin Facial Cleansing Wipes ($5.99) and Garnier SkinActive Micellar Water ($3.99).

Next I pat Benefit’s It’s Potent! Eye Cream ($34) on my eyes. I recently fell in love with Pond’s Dark Spot Correcting Cream ($8.99) and use that at night as well. I love my freckles, but I’m also lusting after Dita Von Teese-worthy porcelain skin. On nights when I feel like I need extra moisture, I add Tarte’s Maracuja Oil ($16) to my T-zone, it feels so silky!

Weekend Makeup

I love doing a fun lip on the weekend like NYX Liquid Suede in Orange County ($7) or Makeup Geek’s Plush Creme in Socialite ($14). I also love adding individual Ardell Duralash Lashes ($3.99) with DUO Eyelash Adhesive in black ($9). My newest beauty obsession is the L’Oreal Infallible Pro Makeup Extender Setting Spray ($16.99). A makeup artist friend turned me on to it, and it made my makeup last through a humid Southern vacay recently!

I love using extra time on the weekend for things like Lush baths and face masks.

I used to work at Lush, and am a die-hard “Lushie” at heart. My favorite bath bomb from them is Guardian of the Forest ($7.65). My current favorite face masks are Tony Moly’s Brightening I’m Real Lemon Sheet Mask ($3.75) and Foxbrim Pure Dead Sea Mud Mask ($12.79).

I may experiment with new makeup trends, but one thing is for sure — I will always have a sharp cat-eye liner and a drawer full of nude lipsticks!
