Here's the latest '90s makeup trend that's coming back
Considering the announcement that Nickelodeon is considering bringing back some of our favorite ’90s TV shows, I think it’s safe to say that this has been a pretty darn good week for those of us who cannot shake off childhood nostalgia. But the great 90s news just keeps rolling in. If you’re like me and used to only buy makeup if you thought Baby Spice would wear it, you will love the newest beauty trend for fall. Brace yourself.
Frosted lips are making a comeback.
Yes! When I was a kid, I tried to achieve that frosted “Oops I Did It Again” lip look by layering sparkly strawberry Lip Smackers and juniper breeze Bath and Body Works glitter. It didn’t taste very good, but it did the job (in my imagination). Now, grownup makeup companies like Tom Ford are offering lipsticks and glosses that provide a sparkly pucker without the medicinal aroma of artificial fruit. Swoon!
Tom Ford’s most recent ad for fall beauty featured a gorgeous, frosted gold lip that is a total showstopper. While it certainly doesn’t look natural – even though I wish that having lips that match an Olympic medal was considered natural – the subdued, luminescent sheen of the lip color makes the look seem super wearable. The frosted lip of the ’90s was limited to cotton candy or almost snowy hues. This more current approach to the fashion includes a way broader color palette, including berries, metallic, and neutrals.
Philippe Goued, the general manager at Tom Ford beauty, told Refinery29 that lipstick formula has come a long way since the 90s. The pearly minerals in frosted lip products today are far more refined than in the past, which means application is easier, less chunky. These developments have lead to the most wearable shimmers yet.
To get the look at home, find your oldest, crustiest Lip Smackers and body glitter and prepare to layer – just kidding. Now that you’re an adult, check out one step frosted lip colors like this peachy one by Tom Ford, or this less expensive one by Milani. The brand Lipstick Queen also offers a frosted lipstick that works as a top layer – that way you can experiment with colors you already own. If you are too impatient to order any of these options online and wait, try patting some gold shimmery eye shadow over some neutral lipstick.
’90s Britney and Baby Spice would be so proud!
