Here’s what the live-action “Beauty and the Beast” director has to say about Belle being an inventor

Today, the full-length trailer for the upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast film dropped and it is truly ~magical~. The highly anticipated film, which stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast, has HUGE shoes to fill, something the cast and director Bill Condon are highly aware of.
In anticipation for the film, which comes out in March, Condon has been speaking out about bringing the film to life and the changes he’s made to the story, which includes making Belle an inventor.

Fans of the original film know that Belle’s dad is the inventor in the family, while Belle was a huge reader. In the live-action version, though, Condon decided that Belle would also be an inventor. Condon explained to Bustle that Belle’s changed profession is meant to be subtle, but it has a defining meaning. He said,
"It's not a defining characteristic ... it's something she shares with [her father] and she uses. You'll see, it's a short moment in the beginning, [she] uses kind of for good social ends. In the original, Belle is very interested in learning. In this version, she's very interested in helping other little girls to learn."
We think this is a brilliant idea.
On taking on the challenging task of making a new version of a beloved film, Condon told Bustle that staying true to the magic of the original was important to the cast and crew. When discussing the changes that have been made to the story, Condon explained,
"We came at it with such an equal love of the movie that I think you can only use your own kind of criteria as a guide. It's [about] making sure that we're not betraying something,"
The anticipation for the star-studded film is starting to get to us! Until March, we’ll have the trailer on repeat and we’ll surely be reading EVERY interview we can get our hands on!
