10 weeks after its release, “Beauty and the Beast” just broke *another* huge record

This tale may be as old as time, but it’s certainly setting some new records. Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast has now grossed over $500 million domestically, making it one of the top 10 highest domestic grossing movies of all time. In fact, the milestone puts the film, which only debuted 10 weeks ago, in eighth place.

The movie, which stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the beast, has earned approximately $501 million in domestic sales alone. (That number hasn’t been adjusted for inflation, but — let’s be real — it’s extraordinary nonetheless.) And internationally, it continues to earn huge numbers. In fact, the movie has already made $1.23 billion dollars worldwide, which is just really impressive.

Of course, Beauty and the Beast previously broke many other records.

Not to mention, the excitement around the live-action remake was palpable from the moment it was announced, and anyone who saw the magic onscreen knows that the highly-anticipated movie definitely lived up to people’s expectations.

Transforming superstar and feminist icon Watson into Belle also probably didn’t hurt the film’s chances of becoming a major hit, nor did the talented (and often hilarious) supporting cast.

In its eighth spot, Beauty and the Beast sits behind similarly epic movies.

The highest domestic box-office earner of all time is currently Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Like that film, the reboot brought a reimagined classic to a new generation of viewers — and its high risks *clearly* paid off in huge box-office rewards.

Our theory: Because Beauty and the Beast is still playing in theaters and continues to show strong returns internationally, it seems likely that it’ll keep smashing all sorts of cinematic earning records in the upcoming weeks.
