The CW might make a Batwoman show — which would be amazing because Kate Kane is DC’s first out lesbian superhero

The CW’s already-packed Arrowverse is about to get even bigger with a groundbreaking new addition. Earlier this year, it was announced that Batwoman would be making an appearance in the The CW superhero universe’s annual four-way crossover event in December (between, deep breath: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow), but now it appears she may be sticking around for good.
Arrowverse boss Greg Berlanti and The Vampire Diaries executive producer Caroline Dries (who is also writing the series), are reportedly developing a Batwoman series for the network. If picked up to series, which would air in 2019, Batwoman would be a breakthrough for LGBTQ representation on television, making Kate Kane — aka Batwoman — the first gay lead in a live-action superhero series. While Berlanti’s Arrowverse does feature a number of LGBTQ characters, they’ve all been supporting characters on their respective shows.
First appearing in the 1956 DC Comics series Detective Comics, Kate Kane was reestablished in the DC Comics universe in 2006 after a 20 year absence. Since her reintroduction, Kate has been depicted as an out lesbian, also making her the first lesbian superhero in DC Comics.
According to Deadline, the series would be a dark take on the vigilante, set on taking down Gotham City’s worst while tacking her own demons. The outlet described Batwoman as:
"Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope."
Yes, not only are we getting our first leading out superhero lead, the CW superhero universe is officially expanding to Gotham City.
No actress has been cast for the crossover event yet, but Batwoman will debut on the CW this December, and hopefully return with her own series in 2019.
