The trailer for Emma Stone’s ultra girl-power movie “Battle of the Sexes” is here
We. Are. So. Excited. The official trailer for Emma Stone’s flick, Battle of the Sexes, is finally here! Yee! If you don’t know much about the film, it’s based on the true story of a tennis match between Billie Jean King (Stone) and Bobby Riggs (Steve Carrell) in 1973. Riggs, who was 55 at the time of the match but a very successful player when he was younger, claimed that women’s tennis was such a joke that he could beat King — who was the current top female tennis player — even though he was many years past his prime.
King, who was 29, initially declined the offer, but later accepted. Part of the reason King changed her mind was because Riggs had convinced another female tennis star of the time, Margaret Court, to play and had absolutely pulverized her on the court.
During an interview with NPR, King says that when she learned the news, she said to herself, “Well, I have to play him now.” She had long resented the insane pay gap between male and female tennis players and wanted to prove that female tennis stars deserved respect as well.
The match was later dubbed “Battle of the Sexes,” and because women’s rights were a controversial subject at the time, the game was watched by millions and became somewhat of a symbol for the feminist movement. But King tells NPR that she also played the match to draw more attention to tennis itself.
The film additionally touches on King coming to terms with her sexuality, as well as Riggs dealing with some of his inner demons, like gambling.
