4 Things You Need to Know About the New ‘Barbie’ Movie
Surprising revelations about the highly-anticipated flick are being released, like Will Ferrell and Issa Rae are involved!
Margot Robbie is a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world — literally. The actress has been living it up in Barbie dreamland for the last few years, producing and starring in the upcoming Barbie film.
According to People, production for Barbie began back in March 2022 in Los Angeles. Over the course of the summer, fans spotted Robbie and her famous co-star, Ryan Gosling, filming at Venice Beach.
Since then, behind-the-scenes photos and promo art for the film have come out and fans are losing their minds over Robbie’s hot pink transformation. But, that’s not the only news bombshell that’s been dropped about the super top-secret movie.
From the film’s release date to the actress who was originally supposed to play the lead character, here’s everything you need to know about Barbie.
1. Barbie is in great directorial hands.
Barbie is being directed by none other than Greta Gerwig, and her real-life Ken, Noah Baumbach, as her co-writer. Gerwig is a three-time Oscar nominee for her work on Lady Bird and Little Women.
Baumback is also a legendary filmmaker. He received acclaimed praise for 2019’s Marriage Story.

2. The cast is star-studded and reportedly includes Will Ferrell and Issa Rae.
Several Hollywood A-listers are coming together to film what is sure to be the most highly anticipated movie of 2023. Gosling will star opposite of Robbie as dreamboat Ken. Other cast members include America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, and Will Ferrell, who is rumored to portray a toy company bigwig, per Deadline.
Even more exciting is the news that we’re getting multiple versions of Barbie and Ken. Issa Rae and Hari Nef are also set to star as Barbie and Simu and Liu and Ncuti Gatwa as Ken.
But what you may not know is that Robbie wasn’t Gerwig’s first choice to play the titular plastic doll. Amy Schumer was. In December 2016, the comedian was tapped to play Barbie but removed herself from the project just four months later.
“They definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,” Schumer told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. Robbie was later cast in January 2019.
3. The movie’s plot is top-secret.
What happens in Barbieland, stays in Barbieland… at least, for now. It appears Gerwig swore the Barbie cast and crew to secrecy as no one has uttered a peep about the movie’s plot.
“People don’t have any idea what to expect [with the film], and I think that that’s the right vibe,” Ferrera recently told People. “Whatever you think it is, it’s not that. It’s something else.”
Based on movie stills we’ve seen thus far, it looks like we can expect to see Robbie in Barbie’s signature and over-the-top, neon-colored wardrobe. And lots and lots of pink.
4. The release date is official.
Barbie isn’t ready to party quite just yet. The film is slated to hit theaters in July 2023, which means we have several more months to wait for this highly anticipated release.
In any case, it just gives us more time to brainstorm who we’d like to hear cover Aqua’s iconic “Barbie Girl” anthem. Any guesses?
