This Barbie has the Instagram-iest Instagram account
There’s Doctor Barbie, Rock Star Barbie, and now… Socality Barbie?
One thought-provoking Instagram account/art project is perfectly satirizing what it means to be a millennial. And – most importantly – it’s doing it all with Barbie as its #1 muse. This popular doll has treated herself to a vanilla and honey lavender double-scoop at Salt and Straw. She’s taken a #casual portrait on some wooden train-tracks overlooking a misty forest. And, of course, she’s accomplished all these fashionable feats while wearing her signature Warby Parkers. Sound familiar?
By definition, socality is: “social nature tendencies assembling in communities.” In other words, the anonymous, Portland-based wedding photographer behind this account is simply taking a cue from, well… us!
“People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions,” the creator explained to Wired. “I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?’”
Socality Barbie’s Instagram was born about three months ago to parody everyone who’s adding #socality and #liveauthentic to their hipster-worthy snapshots. And it seems that this particular Barbie is doing a great job because she’s accrued over 8,000 followers thus far. But, it isn’t all fun and games when you’ve created a well-known lifestyle such as this one.
Socality Barbie’s trendy clothes are mostly handmade. Her Filson backpack was designed using an iron-on patch and some leather. As for her enviable beanie: it’s the finger of a glove. Most of the backdrops are actually authentic as well! (Except for when the camerawoman isn’t in the mood to travel far away. Instead, she’ll use her Photoshop skills to make it happen.)
Aside from all the effort that goes into making Socality Barbie’s life as real as possible, scrolling through her feed is just plain fun. Especially because there’s words of wisdom such as this: “Choosing the right VSCO filter is SO important to the story you’re trying to tell.” Oh! And this is another gem: “Broken crayons still color.”
Even though this type of feed may be addictive to follow, it’s not always the most honest or relatable. Socality Barbie’s mastermind 100% understands this. “I get it, it’s pretty to look at,” she adds. “But it’s so dishonest. Nobody actually lives like this. And it’s so overdone that it’s becoming boring.” So, in essence, Socality Barbie is here to show us all how unrealistic our posed, perfected Instagram alter-egos can be.
Of course, in the process, a new Instagram star is born.
