Barack and Michelle Obama sent everyone at the Golden Globes the most inspiring letter
The Golden Globes on Sunday night marked one of the first major evenings of awards season. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association honored the best in film and TV. It’s already one of the most popular evenings in Hollywood, but this year, a Golden Globes letter from the Obamas made it even cooler.
How so? Well, Barack and Michelle Obama sent a very special message to everyone attending the event. The letter comes as a part of President Obama’s farewell. He leaves office soon to make way for the new president, who will be inaugurated on January 20th.

"Michelle and I send greetings to all those attending the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards. Film and television have captured our audiences for generations — transforming the art of storytelling and challenging our understanding of society. Using the big and small screens to bring diverse tales to life, actors and actresses and creative visionaries behind the scenes have inspired us to find deeper meaning in our shared humanity. Tonight's nominees have devoted their talents to helping us celebrate our triumphs and illustrate our flaws. By enabling us to see ourselves in each other and creating a space for the many narratives that reflect our rich and collective history, they remind us of the power of our voices and ideas and the ways they can shape our world for the better. As you gather to recognize this year's nominees, I wish you all the best for a memorable evening."
That is some pretty high praise from two of the most influential people in our country. But they make a great point — film and television are great at helping us share experiences with one another.
This year’s Golden Globes went to a wonderfully diverse group of people and range of stories, and that’s to be celebrated.
Moonlight took home the award for feature drama for it’s story about a young African American man growing up and coming to terms with his sexuality. La La Land took home the award for feature comedy or musical for its tale of young dreamers in L.A. The Crown, which tells the story of young Queen Elizabeth II, took home the award for drama television. And Atlanta, Donald Glover’s dark comedy about a young man in the underground hip hop scene, took home top honors for comedy television.
Such a beautiful breadth of unique and special stories. And we were so happy to see everyone honored. These attendees totally deserved the support they got from the Obamas, because they truly are giving us new ways to experience life through each others eyes.
