Banksy’s Dismaland is doing something incredible to help refugees
Dismaland may have closed its dark doors, but the enigmatic Banksy is already planning to send his bemusement park on a charitable mission.
Since the forlorn park is no longer in use after its successful five-week run, Banksy will be transporting the leftover material from England to France. Specifically, Dismaland will be making its way to the refugee camp outside Calais, which is where it will serve as a shelter for the 5,000+ displaced people who are attempting to enter Britain.
To announce this meaningful venture, the street artist writes, “Coming soon … Dismaland Calais. All the timber and fixtures from Dismaland are being sent to the ‘jungle’ refugee camp near Calais to build shelters.” He then made sure to add, “No online tickets will be available.” This posting included a picture of what the Dismaland camp will look like with Cinderella’s crestfallen castle surrounded by an array of tents.
Based on what Dismaland showcased when it was open, we’re wondering if this was Banksy’s plan to begin with. The park included various ponds that featured motorboats. Inside these boats, visitors could spot refugees who were attempting to make their way to safety. So maybe this was Banksy’s philanthropic goal all along?
Considering the fact that this park is no small undertaking, it’s expected to take three weeks for crews to dismantle it. Then again, since Dismaland did provide the local seaside town of Weston-Super-Mare with £20 million (about $30 million) in revenue, Banksy definitely has the funds to make his generous dream a reality.
When all is said and done, we’re happy to hear that Dismaland is not only going to be helping those in need. It’s also being recycled and reused, which means that less material is wasted and the environment will also be benefitting from the aftermath of Banksy’s bemusement park.
