This is going to make you want to give up potatoes forever (No, we KNOW)

We’ve got some bad news about potatoes, guys. You might want to brace yourself, because we’re talking about a potato in all its yummy forms. Baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, chips, fries…even (gasp) our beloved tator tots. Nooooooooo.

Pedro might want to go ahead and give up his tots, because according to a new report from The Sydney Morning Herald, eating potatoes (and other delicious starchy foods…we’re looking at you mac and cheese) puts you at risk for developing diabetes.

The risk is even greater for pregnant women. The Herald says, “The study, published in the British Medical Journal, found that women who consumed more than five servings of potatoes per week before becoming pregnant were more likely to get gestational diabetes based on data pulled from thousands of patients over 10 years.”

Five servings of potatoes over a week actually doesn’t sound like a crazy huge amount. I mean, it’s not like these women were eating potatoes for every meal or anything. And gestational diabetes is a serious health risk. Most women with the condition deliver healthy babies, but the disease needs to be carefully monitored because it can cause complications such as excessive birth weight, early birth and respiratory distress syndrome, low blood sugar, high blood pressure, preeclampsia and possible diabetes later in life for both the mother and unborn child.

Before you vow never to let another french fry pass your lips, keep in mind that eating the occasional potato isn’t going to kill you or anything. The key, of course, is moderation. Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits and veggies and TREAT YO SELF every now and then to some fries. Or chips. Or tots.

You get the idea.
