We have some bad news for anyone hoping Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling would sing at the Oscars

We’re so sorry to have to inform you of this. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling will not be performing songs from La La Land at the Oscars.

“City of Stars” and “Audition,” written by La La Land composer Justin Hurwitz, as well as Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, are up for best original song.

Obviously, everybody hoped Gosling and Stone would sing them at the Oscars, since nominated songs are usually performed during the show. But in fact, there’s been no word on whether or not the songs will be performed at all.

We cannot fathom why. La La Land has been soaring through awards season, and captured a hopefulness that our zeitgeist badly needed. In large part due to Gosling’s gorgeous dancing and piano playing, and Stone’s effortlessly vulnerable performance. So, what’s the deal, Academy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=

The La La Land songs are up against Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, Troll‘s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Justin Timberlake, Max Martin and Karl Johan Schuster and “The Empty Chair” by J. Ralph and Sting from Jim: The James Foley Story.

All excellent contenders, so we won’t be mad no matter which way the win blows.

But this news about no Gosling/Stone performances is mind-boggling.

We thought in this town it worked on a sort of one-for-you, one-for-us type system. So, Academy, maybe you’ll rethink your decision, yeah? Great.
