The ‘Back to the Future’ prediction that looks like it actually might come true this year
October 21, 2015 marks the day that Back to the Future heroes Doc and Marty McFly travel thirty years into the future in the franchise’s second installment. Since Back to the Future Part II was released in 1989, its creators had no idea what 2015 would be like, so they used their imaginations. They didn’t worry too much about keeping things realistic, writing in flying cars, food hydration machines, and a World Series win for the Cubs, a team that currently has a 107-year losing streak when it comes to championships.
We don’t have any flying cars or food hydration gadgets (which is incredibly disappointing), but there is a chance that the Cubs really could win the World Series this year. On October 21, the team will be playing the Mets in game four of the championship – coincidence? I think not. One of Back to the Future Part II’s writers, Bob Gale, revealed to ESPN that he suggested the Cubs’ victory as a joke; he’s actually a die-hard Cardinals fan.
Okay, sure. Play it off as a joke and pretend you don’t have the power to predict the future. Whatever you say, Bob.
In Back to the Future Part II, the odds that the Cubs will win the World Series are 100 to 1, but ESPN did the math and found that people were betting 8 to 1 odds in Las Vegas until March, when the team’s massive, loyal fanbase bet in their favor so much that the odds went down to 6 to 1. Oh well, close enough. Those are still pretty darn good odds.
Luckily, no matter what team you root for, movie theaters around the country will be holding special screenings of Back to the Future Part II to celebrate Marty’s “arrival” to 2015. Sadly, if Doc and Marty McFly came to the REAL 2015, they would find no flying cars and no futuristic pizza.
Someone should really get on that. If the Cubs might win their first World Series since 1908, then maybe NASA can make hydrated pizza a possibility? NASA, you up for it?
