Here’s that $20 ‘Back to the Future’ Pepsi you ordered

Back to the Future II promised the world numerous futuristic inventions that have yet to be invented — like time travel and the hoverboard, for example. Actually, scratch that, we’ve got the hoverboard. But one invention fans of the iconic movie will certainly be excited about is Pepsi. Not just regular Pepsi, though, since that obviously already exists, but the famous Pepsi Perfect that Marty McFly purchased from Cafe 80s on the Courthouse Square.

That’s right, Pepsi has announced that on October 21, 2015 (AKA the exact day Marty McFly landed the Delorean in Back to the Future II), they will release a limited run of 6,500 bottles of Pepsi Perfect. The individual 16.9 oz. bottles will retail for $20.15, which isn’t quite as much the $50 Doc Brown gave Marty McFly to pay for the futuristic Pepsi, but symbolic, nonetheless. The bottles will be sold online, but Pepsi recommends that fans stay tuned to their social media to find out exactly where they can purchase the limited edition bottles in person.

In case you need a refresher, here’s the original Pepsi Perfect bottle:

“Fans have always been a little crazy about it,” Lou Arbetter, PepsiCo’s senior director of marketing, told USA Today about the Back to the Future version of Pepsi. “And so we wanted to take advantage of the fact that Marty traveled to the future, to this month, and wanted to actually come out with the product.”

While the bottles will be new, the flavor inside Pepsi Perfect won’t be. But for fans who want to taste the nostalgia, the recipe will include all the sugar of original Pepsi.

“We’re fans of this popular trilogy, and just generally, if you work at Pepsi you’re fans of pop culture. The brand has made its mark in pop culture frankly since Michael Jackson moonwalked. We’ve been dancing in and around pop culture for a while,” Arbetter said. “So we look at this as another opportunity to have a little bit of fun.”

This little bit of fun is going to make a lot of fans very happy in a big way! Given that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the first Back to the Future film, there’s a growing list of other companies that will also be joining in on the fun. Back in January, Nike announced their plans to release replicas of Marty McFly’s sneakers with power laces sometime this year, AMC movie theaters will be hosting free screenings of all three Back to the Future films on October 21, Amazon is screening all three movies for free for its Prime users throughout October and Reston, VA will be renaming its town to Hill Valley from October 21 to October 25.

That’s a lot of Back to the Future stuff happening, and we’re mad about none of it. We can’t wait to get our very own Pepsi Perfect to hold onto forever, because it’s a collectors item, after all!
