“Bachelor” alum Vienna Girardi lost twin girls in a miscarriage, and our hearts go out to her

Our hearts hurt for the season 14 winner of The Bachelor. In a heartbreaking Facebook post, Vienna Girardi announced that she lost twin girls via miscarriage. At 18 weeks, Girardi went in for an ultrasound after her perinatologist noticed a warning sign of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. New mothers are given this diagnosis when it appears that one twin takes in more nutrients than the other.

"They said that it did look like it had improved over the last week though," Girardi explained in her August 13th post. "Unfortunately, that was not the case and that evening my water broke due to the amniotic sacs rupturing. I spent the next 2 days in the hospital trying everything to save them."

Her doctors warned her that if Girardi did not go into labor she would be at extreme risk of infection and even death. There was only a less than 5% chance that the twins would be able to survive outside the womb at 18 weeks.

Girardi delivered but the twins only survived for two days. Girardi also suffered septic shock and racked up a 104-degree fever.

“My little angels went to Heaven on Aug 5th and I was rushed into the OR for emergency surgery and was in the ICU for 4 days,” Girardi wrote. “I don’t know why this happened and I pray the Lord gives me strength to understand why he needed my little girls.”

After trying to make sense of such tragedy, Girardi agreed to donate her girls to science to help doctors better understand TTTS and hopefully save unborn twins in the future.

She asks for the public to respect her privacy at this time and we will do just that. We’re sending our love and supportive thoughts to Girardi and her family.
