The trailer for “Baby Driver” features serious chemistry between Lily James and Ansel Elgort

Shield your eyes. The sparks are flying between Baby Driver co-stars Lily James and Ansel Elgort, and they are practically blinding. The trailer for the pulse-pounding heist movie dropped at SXSW this week, and it’s already getting our attention.

This film is in the vein of Fast and the Furious and Gone in 60 Seconds. But Baby Driver tells the story of a professional driver named Baby (Elgort). Of course, Baby gets mixed up with some really bad guys. The bad guys, played by Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, and Kevin Spacey, use his feelings for his waitress girlfriend (James) as leverage to control him.

Elgort plays the title character, who is a master driver with skills that put him in high demand. He always has ear buds in to drive out a constant hum he suffered from a childhood accident, and the music gives him a special edge. Music also inspired director Edgar Wright to write the individual scenes.

“I was just listening through my record collection and I’d envision scenes,” Wright said of the movie at SXSW. “I wouldn’t write scenes until I found the right track.” Wright infuses the film with his signature humor and wit. Wright is best known for cult faves like Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, Hot Fuzz, and Shaun of the Dead.

Baby Driver is already getting a lot of good buzz from the SXSW crowd.

Deadline reports, “‘That is going to make a lot of money,’ was among the comments overheard as the revved-up audience left the screening and a boisterous post-movie Q&A that climaxed Day 2 at the festival.”

The movie is set in Atlanta, and producers had to shut down the major interstate twice to get the scenes just right. Wright said he didn’t want the town to “play LA,” and the movie looks all the better for it.

Baby Driver is set to premiere in theaters later this summer, probably August. But it’s already giving us some major blockbuster vibes.
