Ayesha Curry shared the unconventional marriage advice that keeps her decade-long relationship strong
Ayesha Curry was looking forward to Christmas for one very specific reason: matching jammies. “I love Thanksgiving, but I wish I could skip through Thanksgiving and that whole month and just move right on to Christmas,” she told HelloGiggles in a recent interview. “We wear matching pajamas, and I just love the holiday spirit around Christmastime.”
The chef, entrepreneur, and former host of The Great American Baking Show is a busy mom of three kids, Riley, Ryan, and Canon, and wife of Golden State Warriors Basketball player Steph Curry, and she’s beloved on social media for her candid posts and sweet family photos. Spoiler alert: she posted one of the Currys in their matching Christmas PJs, and it’s cuter than you even imagined.
Now that the holidays are behind us, though, Curry is back to work. Today, January 16th, she’s helping Covergirl launch an inclusive line of nude lipsticks in seven shades, and gearing up to restart her meal-kit delivery service, Homemade. We spoke with her about the lipstick drop—the new Outlast All-Day Nudes collection is available now—her family life, and what’s next for her many business ventures.
HelloGiggles: When I think of your beauty aesthetic, I picture you as someone who loves a bold lip. What drew you to this partnership and these nude shades?
Ayesha Curry: Okay, I love bold lips. But honestly, most mornings I’m taking my kids to school and it’s not the first thing somebody at my school wants to see at 8:30 in the morning [laughs]. So I feel like nude lips are just universal, you feel so polished and clean and it has this subtlety to it.
HG: Who do you envision wearing this line?
AC: Everybody! That’s the best part about it—there’s so many different shades. There’s seven shades of this nude lip, so no matter your skin tone or your undertone, there’s the perfect shade for you.
HG: In terms of your personal skin care routine, what’s the last product you put on every night before bed no matter where you are?
AC: So for me, I’ve been really into face oils lately. I’ll put on my benzoyl peroxide for acne, but I’ll finish it off with a face oil at night. I was really intimidated by it at first, but then I realized it’s not like adding kitchen olive oil on your face—it’s really soft and subtle.
HG: What would you say is the difference between your everyday beauty and your makeup on date night?
AC: I would say that on date nights I like to do a little bit more. I’m not in the thick of baby-ness and rolling around on the floor with my kids, so it’s the perfect time to experiment with color and shades, so I love to add a little more. Do a little more contouring, a little more eye makeup. Whereas every day I kind of keep it simple—I do a bold brow, clean skin, and a nice nude lip. So I love that I can keep that face on that I’ve had all day and kind of just add to it.
HG: I’d love to ask a little bit about your family life and your work. What’s something you think people would be surprised to know about your marriage to Steph?
AC: I want to say that we’re good communicators, but maybe that wouldn’t be a surprise. But that’s what keeps our bond strong. Even when we don’t want to talk about something, we talk about it. Especially from my perspective, I’m a lay it all out on the table kind of girl, so whether it’s a tough conversation or an easy conversation, I never have a tight lip. I tell it like it is and I tell it straight, and ultimately I think it keeps things a lot better for us.
HG: Do you think that’s what’s helped you stay together for so long and through so many huge changes in your careers?
AC: I definitely do, and I think that mutual support has also done that. And then also the biggest thing, both of our parents are still married and have been married for 30-plus years, and the one thing that they both shared with us—some through learning it the hard way, some through just making sure that they do it—is just making sure that we put each other first, even before the kids, as tough as that sounds. Putting ourselves first, and making sure that we make time for date nights and for each other. That’s been very important, as hard as it is. Because when you become a parent, you want to put your kids first, and we do, but we do it second to our relationship. Because ultimately, when our relationship is good, the kids are happy and they’re thriving and our family life is good. We have to put that into perspective and realize that it’s not us being selfish, it’s making sure we set a strong foundation.
HG: I wonder if you have this moment in your mind: the moment you knew you wanted to marry Steph?
AC: I think it’s when I realized how humble and selfless he was. And honestly he’s so funny, I don’t think a lot of people know how funny he is. When I realized I could just let go and laugh and be myself around him, and that even with everything he had going on in his life at the time he was still this humble, kind, generous, gentle person, I knew that’s who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. And then I have two younger brothers, and he would come over to my house, play video games with them late into the night, and at the time one of my brothers was still in high school and the other was in middle school, and he would come over as a college student and just hang out with them. That was so special to me, that he was willing to do that. I was like, ‘He’ll make a great dad.’ And he has!
HG: You have accomplished so much—you are truly the busiest woman I can think of. What is next for you in terms of your professional life?
AC: I have my cookware and my bedding line, I have aprons and kitchen textiles coming out. But we’ve been in the thick of a re-brand and revamp of my Homemade delivery service and we’re kind of broadening the service, getting into retail, and there’s going to be some product added to the site, and overall just a different ethos. I hope people are going to be really receptive to it. We’ll still have the meal kits—just from a quality standpoint, there were some things I want to change. [We plan to re-launch] in January.
