What’s the most “fun” outfit you can imagine? We each have our own style, but there are just some things that make us feel like we’re living our best life. Cue feathers, sheer paneling, vibrant colors, and peekaboo hems — all the makings of a fun outfit without the fuss. No one wore this ideal look better at last night’s VMAs than Vanessa Hudgens, whose red Yanina Couture dress was both playful and seductive.

This look is inspiring our own fall wardrobe, and our dream wardrobe as well. I mean, this strapless scarlet gown has it all: texture, an unexpected silhouette, and sheer, long sleeves.

Vanessa’s dress was like the best two-for-one deal ever.

The strapless red dress featured heavy scale-like texturing and a sheer, long-sleeved top. Coupled with a sheer panel that extended the short dress into midi-length territory, and of course more texture, this look was memorable and statement-making in the best way.

You know that saying, “less is more”? Well, it feels like we’re officially over that (at least in Vanessa’s case). With her short, black hair slicked back and a matching, metallic red cat-eye, Vanessa shows us how to do maximalist monochrome in the most accessible and elegant way.

Next time you’re inspired to wear your loudest colors, just remember Vanessa’s trick. Red on red, plus a matching cat-eye. Ultimately, it seems that a striking monochrome look with matching makeup is sure to be memorable and so much fun.

Now get to it, and bloom like the rose you are. We know Vanessa would approve.
