Olympic skater Gracie Gold is seeking treatment for anxiety, depression, and an eating disorder, and our hearts are with her
We love Olympic figure skater Gracie Gold, and we admire her openness. Recently, Gold announced that she’s in treatment for an eating disorder, anxiety, and depression. And our hearts are with her big time.
Though she’s young, Gold has accomplished a lot in life. Her exceptional performance won a medal for team figure skating in the 2014 Winter Olympics. Team USA ladies tend to crush it at the Olympics, and though it’s easy to assume that means their lives are perfect, that is not always (or ever) the case.
Gold is so brave for speaking up about her struggles. She decided to sit out the Grand Prix Figure Skating competition next month to take care of herself first. Though we are sure it is hard to make such a decision, we support her 100000%.
Gold went on to thank her family, coaches, fans, and sponsors for supporting her so thoroughly. Gold won A bronze medal in 2014 and though it is hard to hear that she is going through all of this simultaneously, we are so proud that she is brave enough to speak out.
At this time, her health is what matters the most.
Having to perform as a star athlete for your country while you are battling depression, anxiety, and an eating disorder sounds nearly impossible to navigate.
Gold is strong and resilient, and we wish her a healthy recovery.
The pressure that is placed on women in our society generally speaking is too much. But in the sports world, it is intensified. As a figure skater, Gold has likely grown up around intense scrutiny. Competing in even one Olympic ceremony is probably life altering — and Gold has the support of other athletes as well. Fellow skater Ashley Wagner praised Gold’s bravery.
We are so happy to hear Gold is putting herself first. Her sport is important, but her mental and physical health is even more so. We are wishing her a speedy recovery.
