The 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, commonly known as the SAG Awards, kick off on Sunday, January 21st. Actress Kristen Bell will be the first-ever host of the awards ceremony, which will air on TNT and TBS and feature all-female presenters. Following months of Hollywood mired in sexual misconduct controversy post-Weinstein, it’s certainly a refreshing change of pace.
The 2018 Golden Globes saw allegations leveled against The Disaster Artist actor James Franco following his win. Several commentators pointed out the hypocrisy of Franco’s Time’s Up pin at the ceremony, and five women have come forward and accused him of inappropriate or predatory behavior. Following Franco’s reckoning, Babe.net published a controversial piece on Master of None star Aziz Ansari titled “I went on a date with Aziz Ansari. It turned into the worst night of my life.” The piece sparked a divide among commentators, demonstrating the complex, nuanced, and pervasive nature of rape culture and sexual coercion.
So, will Master of None actor Aziz Ansari be at the SAG Awards?
The answer: Most likely.
Commentators questioned whether Franco would attend the ceremony following Violet Paley’s accusations of sexual abuse. It has since been reported that Franco will, in fact, be attending the SAG Awards after an absence at the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards. Ansari, nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Master of None, was also in attendance at the Critics’ Choice Awards, but this was prior to Babe’s revelations. Ansari notably won the 2018 Golden Globe for Master of None.
The divided reactions to allegations against Ansari (which are notably less severe than those against Franco and others exposed post-Weinstein) suggest that he will not hide from the public arena any time soon. So, yes, Ansari will most likely be at the SAG Awards.
Perhaps his attendance will spark much-needed conversation and education on affirmative sexual consent.
