Ava DuVernay says her new show will have an all women directorial team
Selma director Ava DuVernay recently shared in an interview at Sundance that her first television show, Queen Sugar, will feature an all-women directorial team, mentioning that many will be women from the “black independent film space.”
“I jokingly say I’m getting my ‘Shonda’ on,” DuVernay says, “But I don’t even know how she juggles all those shows because this show is wearing me out — in the best way. It’s a lot, but it’s fun. It’s like a 13 hour film.”
The 13-episode adaptation of Natalie Baszile’s novel about a mother and daughter who inherit a sugarcane farm in the heart of Louisiana is set to air on the Oprah Winfrey Network. The first season is currently being shot in New Orleans.
“It’s an exciting time to invite women into this show, and to try to tell the story of this family, of really strong women who do an amazing thing,” DuVernay adds.
