Ava DuVernay becomes the first woman of color to direct a $100 million film
A Wrinkle In Time got us all kinds of emotional back in middle school. It was scary and poignant and full of awesome female characters (and the movie version will be full of them, too!)
Now, another badass woman, Ava DuVernay, is directing the movie version of the book, making her the first woman of color woman to direct a live-action feature film with a budget of over $100 million. The only other women to share the title with her are Kathryn Bigelow, who directed K-19: The Widowmaker in 2002, and Patty Jenkins who directed Wonder Woman, which premieres next year.

Ava tweeted about the news, saying, rather humbly, that she is not the first capable of such an honor, but that she is excited, and thankful for Disney Studios for working with her.

When a user pointed out that Ava’s film will be the first of 335 films made with a budget of over $100 million to feature an African-American woman, Ava went on to say that it is a shame that audiences have missed out on so many stories in the past, but that she is hopeful for change.
In fact, Ava herself is a big part of that change, and we couldn’t be more inspired by her. At the age of 27, she started a marketing firm that specialized in “delivering audiences of color to films like Dreamgirls and Invictus. ”
Then, in 2014, she directed Selma, a film about Martin Luther King Jr. and the 1965 Selma to Montgomery Civil Rights march.
