This famous author gave his favorite high school teacher a life-saving gift

It’s no secret that a good teacher can have a profound impact on a student’s life. But this incredible story proves that a good student can have just as big an impact on a teacher’s life. Best-selling thriller and mystery author Brad Meltzer and his 11th grade history teacher, Ellen Sherman, have impacted each other’s lives in the most inspiring way. When Meltzer was a student, he was one of Sherman’s best, and being a good student is one of the best gifts you can give a teacher. But his real gift came 30 years later, when he found Sherman a kidney.

Sherman always remembered Meltzer positively, describing him as a model student who stood out, even in high school:

While there wasn’t much indication of their bond during school, Meltzer went on to thank Sherman in the dedication of his book History Decoded: The 10 Greatest Conspiracies of All Time in 2013.

When Meltzer reached out to let Sherman know about the dedication, she informed him of some slightly worrying news:

So Meltzer sprung into action, and the response to his post was an overwhelming number of calls offering donations. However, there still wasn’t a match. A year and a half passed and, despite the enthusiasm, no one who had offered was compatible. Then Amy Waggoner came along.

She saw the post and felt compelled to get tested. It was a match! From that point on, she never wavered. She was determined to help.

Last week, Waggoner and Sherman underwent the procedure, and are reported to be in good spirits and healing nicely. “Amy’s an inspiration to me,” said Sherman. “I open my eyes every day and think, what a miracle this is.”

We’re inspired, too. Let this serve as a reminder of the importance of compassion, and the effect that everyday acts of kindness can have on someone’s life. What a good way to start the week!
