We hardly recognized Aubrey Plaza as a social media obsessed stalker in the trailer for “Ingrid Goes West”
We’re used to seeing Aubrey Plaza in a variety of comedic roles, from her hilarious stint as April Ludgate on Parks and Recreation to her performance alongside Anna Kendrick in last year’s Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.
But her newest role — as a social-media-obsessed stalker in Ingrid Goes West — has Plaza convincing us very deeply that she can lend her talents to pretty much any genre.
In the dark comedy’s newly released red-band trailer, Plaza’s Ingrid Thornberg is introduced in a sequence where she’s obsessively checking an acquaintance’s Instagram account on her wedding day, only to become so caught up in the hashtagged moments that she shows up to the event and pepper-sprays the bride in the face as punishment for not inviting her. Seriously.
The trailer doesn’t give away too much about what leads up to Ingrid’s maniacal episode, but we are introduced to Taylor Sloane: a social-media star (played by the always fabulous Elizabeth Olsen) whom Ingrid becomes entranced by — to the point where she (you guessed it) goes west to be close to Taylor.
And she trades in her famous dark locks for a blonde new ‘do and fashion sense worthy of any Olsen, tbh.
Other standout moments from the trailer? Oh you know, just the usual ingredients of an action-packed film: gun violence, drug use, reckless driving, semi-nude dancing — all presented amidst a perfect-summer backdrop, neon-light credits, and a kickass soundtrack.

Ingrid Goes West, alsostarring O’Shea Jackson Jr., Wyatt Russell, and Billy Magnussen, hits theaters Aug. 4. Nothing like a little dark humor to mark the end of summer — which, for those going back to school around then, might seem a little too fitting.
