Ashley Judd is taking an important stand against sexist Internet trolls
The Internet isn’t always a safe place for women. Trolls and bullies often make women their targets for reasons as simple as tweeting an opinion. That’s exactly what happened to Ashley Judd, but she’s not going to take it. In fact, Judd is pressing charges.
Over the weekend Judd tweeted an opinion about her favorite team, the University of Kentucky Wildcats. In response, she received a barrage of threats and explicit insults from users. Although we don’t want to give these hateful messages any more of a platform, here’s what Judd herself said about the tweets she received.
Definitely not okay! Judd has been active in putting an end to gender-based harassment online, but she’s decided to take things one step further and take these trolls to court.
On MSNBC, she dropped the awesome news in a super low-key way: “Everyone needs to take personal responsibility for what they write, and [for] not allowing this misinterpretation and shaming culture on social media to exist . . .And by the way, I’m pressing charges.”
She then told the “Today Show” that she would be spending most of Monday “filing police reports at home.”
Although it’s sad that women continue to experience this kind of intense and violence-laced trolling online, we are so proud that Judd has decided to make a strong stand. It’s unacceptable that women can’t feel safe sharing a simple opinion on a game, and it’s time for that to change. Hopefully Judd’s lawsuit is the first step to bringing an end to gendered violence online!
