Model Ashley Graham just gave the most inspiring body positivity talk ever
We’re big fans of Ashley Graham, a model who is categorized as plus-size in the modeling world and regularly gives us a much needed dose of body positivity. True to form, as E! reports, the TED Talk she just gave in Valencia, Spain entitled “Plus-size? More Like My Size!” was a ginormous love letter to self-love.
“You are bold, you are brilliant and you are beautiful,” she begins her speech, talking to herself in a full-length mirror set up onstage. “There is no other woman like you. You are capable. Back fat? I see you popping over my bra today, but that’s alright I’m going to choose to love you. And think thighs? You are just so sexy you can’t stop rubbing each other. That’s alright. I’m going to keep you. And cellulite? I have not forgotten about you. I’m going to choose to love you even though you want to take over my whole bottom half. You’re a part of me and I love you.”
“I felt free once I realized I was never going to fit in the mold that society wanted me to fit in,” Graham explains to her audience. ” I’m never going to be perfect enough for an industry that defines perfection from the outside in….rolls, curves, cellulite—all of it. I love every part of me.”
Though the fashion industry labels Graham as “plus-size,” the model likes to think of herself as “my size.” Graham started modeling at the age of 13, and the road to self-acceptance was a long and hard one.
Citing a survey that Dove conducted in which they interviewed thousands of women in ten different countries, and found that only 2% of the women they interviewed considered themselves beautiful, Graham calls us to action.
“We need to work together to redefine the global vision of beauty, and it starts with becoming your own role model,” Graham implores us.
“It is critical that men and women create a body positive environment. Uplift the important women in your life! Create a safe space for them to express their body and their beauty for who they are, not because of who they’re not. Be you. Be real. Be authentic. Be your favorite kind of woman. Don’t let anyone else take that job. And remember, this is the generation of body diversity. The current is changing.”
To which we say PREACH.
