This woman just used body paint to make a gripping statement about body image
We’re frankly blown away by this new video by artist Jody Steel, which combines art with a body image message to make a truly powerful statement. In fact, the video is so affecting it’s been shared more than 700,000 times on Facebook and viewed millions and millions of times; we’re kinda hoping it will take over social media entirely.
In the vid, Jody uses body paint and some serious art skills to paint her stomach into a twisted rope. The optical illusion created by the blacking out of her sides is quite frankly frightening, as we watch her figure being transformed into an unnatural, painful-looking hourglass.
In a statement on her Facebook page, Jody detailed her thought process behind the video. “There have been times I’ve look in a mirror and wished for a perfect figure. No matter how much I went to the gym or how little I ate carbs and sugar, I still didn’t see what I imagined was perfect.”
Many of us can certainly relate to those awful body image thoughts. Steel discussed why releasing this image of false perfection finally broke her out of the unhealthy cycle: “Once I realized that naturally, I don’t have a coke bottle figure, or long and thin legs, I began to let go of the pressures I’ve felt to fulfill an image that our society has deemed the pinnacle of beauty. I like to adventure and I love to try new foods—especially if they’re spicy. So let go of your demons and learn to enjoy the things you love in life. You can be healthy and happy.”
Steel is no newbie at using her body as her art. Her incredible Instagram account has a ton of her body-canvas artwork, like this one that we love:
