This artist is transforming people into Frida Kahlo, and where can we sign up?
We’re pretty sure everyone knows who Frida Kahlo is, but in case you don’t, a quick reminder: Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist, activist, and communist who’s known for her bold colors, striking spirit, and unibrow. Frida’s art dealt with her lifetime of chronic pain as well as with politics, not to mention nature and love. The artist’s 110th birthday was earlier this month, and just last week, over a thousand Frida doppelgängers gathered to break a world record.
In case you’re jealous you didn’t have the chance to imitate the icon’s impeccable style, Brazilian photographer Camila Fontenele de Miranda has made it her mission to transform people into Frida.

Her project, “Todos Podem Ser Frida,” translates to “we can all be Frida,” which is quite literally the whole point of the series. Camila transforms her subjects, which includes men, women, and children, into Frida. Thanks to makeup and costuming — not to mention the photographer’s camera skills — subjects eyes light up with the spirit of the artist.
Camila discovered Frida’s work in college, instantly feeling a kinship and connection to the artist. The rest is history.

In an interview with HuffPost, Camila explains the significance behind these photographs. She says,
“In the beginning I didn’t know where this work would take me, because everything was a special and personal relation between me and [Kahlo], and my intention was to communicate artistically, to discover myself."

The subjects’ experiences are also vital for Camila because they get to learn about themselves through this process.

Next, Camila is working to release a book of her portraits, which she started a fundraiser for.

We can’t wait to see the final result. We’re sure Frida herself would be proud.
