Ariel Winter’s advice for dealing with social media haters is SO important

Living in the spotlight as a young woman can be extremely difficult in the age of social media. That’s why it’s important for women not to let online trolls get to them. Modern Family star Ariel Winter offered advice for dealing with haters online, and her thoughts are spot on.

Ariel spoke to Glamour at their annual Women of the Year Summit as part of the “We Are Digital Girls” panel, because confidence online has become increasingly important. No one knows that better than Ariel, who has been in the public eye since she was 11-years-old.

Ariel Winter wants to remind young women that no matter what online haters say, no one is ever “asking for it.”

Ariel posted the photo above and got a lot of negative comments for it, even though we think she looks fabulous. Throughout her career, Ariel explains that she’s been criticized for her body. At some points, she’s judged as too fat, and at others, she’s judged too thin. But when commenters posted so much negativity about this photo, Ariel had had enough. She was particularly tired of comments that suggested she was “asking for” negative comments by posting the photo.

Ariel said, "It was one of the most heartbreaking things. No matter what we're wearing, no matter what we're doing, no matter what happens, we are never asking for it."

But because of that experience, Ariel made the important change to stop reading online comments.

Ariel said,"I realized when I was 16 and a half or so that I had wasted so much time trying to please everyone else. I had to take that time to be happy...and I really did. It was the best decision I ever made. I stopped reading comments."

We love that Ariel realized how much time and energy can be wasted trying to make everyone happy. She made the right decision to love herself, rather than worry about the rest of the world’s opinion. Although, as part of the rest of the world, we’d like to say that our opinion is that Ariel totally rocks.

Because it’s so much healthier to shrug off the trolls than play into their game.

But don’t worry, Ariel, we totally get you, and we think you’re awesome!
