We thought Ariana Grande would never nix her signature sky-high ponytail, but this is 2020, people—anything can happen. The singer debuted a totally new look on Instagram on August 25th, ditching her typical pony and sporting two pigtails instead. Double the tails, double the fun? That’s not how the saying goes, but we think it might be true, nonetheless. The transformation doesn’t stop there: Not only did Ari swap her trademark hairstyle, she also switched up her hair color, opting for a late-aughts trend: ombre hair.
On August 25th, the Grammy-winning singer posted a close-up picture that shows off her high pigtails, which look exactly like her ponytail, just doubled and on the sides of her head. The selfie also shows Ari wearing iridescent, catlike eye makeup and a bedazzled face mask, creating an outer space vibe. She captioned the photo simply, “greetings,” which kinda confirms our space theory.
This selfie is swoon-worthy, yes, but the mirror selfies that followed made us even more googly-eyed.
In the next pair of pictures, we can see Ari’s pigtails in their entirety, and—gasp—they’re not the color we were expecting.
Grande’s roots are still her typical dark brown, but the bottom half of the (incredibly long and thick) pigtails are totally blonde, as are the strands wrapping around the tops of the pigtails.
Ari kept her caption simple again, using only the rain emoji to describe the photos. This cryptic caption makes us think Grande might be rehearsing for this weekend’s 2020 MTV Video Music Awards with her “Rain on Me” collaborator Lady Gaga. Fingers crossed.
Fans and celebs were quick to react to Grande’s new look with just as many heart eyes as we expected. Millie Bobby Brown wrote, “oh. wow.” in one comment, followed by another that said, “this is everything.” Bebe Rexha spoke for all of us by saying, “DAMN,” and Halle Berry continued the all-caps enthusiasm by writing, “OH OK ??”.
Grande’s new look is a big departure from the natural curls she showed off during quarantine. And although we’re suckers for those dreamy waves, it’s exciting to see the old Ari back, because we’re thinking it means she’s back at work, making more music for us to belt out over and over.
