This news about Ariana Grande and “Hairspray Live” is making us all kinds of sad

These days, queen Ariana Grande is a dangerous woman whose hits are consistently the best option for all-out shower singing. But back in the day, she got her start playing Cat on Victorious. And now, she’s returning to her acting roots, this time playing Penny in a remake of the 2002 Broadway hit, Hairspray!

Given her amazing voice, we were expecting that Ariana would get the spotlight in a few songs, like Carly Rae Jepsen, who had a song written for her character when she played Frenchie in Grease.

But, it turns out Penny doesn’t have any major solos, and there won’t be any songs written for her, which is a total bummer!!

But on the bright side, Ariana is excited about the role. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Producer Neil Meron said she was in love with the role.

“I think one of the thrills is that Ariana wanted to play that role as written. She really, really felt it, she loved it…basically she loved the fact that she held off those powerful pipes until the very end, and there’s some sort of artistic merit in terms of Ariana doing that role in terms of the surprise for her audience.”

Ariana also said she is geeking out over the role, adding: “I never thought it would actually happen… My theater geek inside, which is what I am, I can’t take it. It’s very overwhelming, very exciting. And Penny’s been my favorite character since my start… Pop music is fun, but this is way more fun.”

While we wish Hairspray! was giving us new Ariana solos to add to our shower singing repertoire, we still can’t wait for the show, which airs on December 7th on NBC.
