Ariana Grande goes full Hunger Games in her new “Boyfriend” video, and we’re obsessed
Update: August 2nd, 11:30 a.m. ET: The time has come—Ari’s latest bop for the ages is here. Ariana Grande released the video for her new single “Boyfriend” on Thursday night, and it wasn’t what we expected. From a teaser she posted on Instagram, we knew the video featured Social House, and we knew Ari was rocking a longer, looser, more retro hairstyle. But we didn’t know she would shoot heart-shaped lasers out of her nipples. Yes, you read that right.
“Boyfriend” is an anthem about not dating someone—but not wanting them to date anyone else either. It’s relatable for anyone who has felt that “are we, or aren’t we?” uncertainty, and we’re jamming out and nodding along to the lyrics in agreement. Grande took to Twitter to explain the purpose behind the song’s lyrics.
We love the nostalgic vibes of this video and the thoughtful message Ariana put behind it. Also, we think she should make this her new signature ‘do.
Ari takes the familiar jealousy to a whole other level in the “Boyfriend” video. She jumps over staircases, tackles her “not boyfriend’s” love interests, and shoots them with a bow and arrow—all in the name of love, of course. Who knew she was so good with a bow and arrow?
The “Boyfriend” video has so many meme-worthy moments, and Twitter has been quick to fill our feeds with hilarious Ari tweets.
Is anyone surprised that the song is already #1? We definitely aren’t. Check out the whole video here:
On Monday, July 29th, Ariana Grande surprised fans by dropping a teaser for her upcoming summer single “Boyfriend,” featuring Social House. The pop star shared a short clip on social media from the song’s music video, which drops Friday, August 2nd. Yes, this Friday. It’s exciting news for Arianators who have been waiting for Grande to release new music ever since her back-to-back albums, Sweetener and Thank U, Next, and her collab “Monopoly” with Victoria Monét in April.
In the “Boyfriend” teaser video, the singer lounges on a couch with Social House, the pop duo composed of Michael “Mike” Foster and Charles “Scootie” Anderson. The pair previously worked with Grande on hits like “7 rings” and “thank u, next” and joined her on her successful Sweetener Tour this year.
Elsewhere in the 11-second snippet, we see Grande play-fighting in a bathroom with a mystery man, whom we can only assume is her love interest in the video.

For now, it’s not clear what the track is about, but a potential lyric includes, “You ain’t my boyfriend,” which Grande teased in an Instagram caption last week.
She also teased fans with photo stills from what we can now confirm is the set of the music video. In the black-and-white shots, Grande hangs out with Social House in various looks from the video—one of which includes Givenchy, the fashion brand she’s recently become the face of.
One of Grande’s photo captions even sparked Taylor Swift collaboration rumors after she posted a bow and arrow emoji, which fans posited might be a reference to Swift’s new track, “The Archer.” Though we’d love nothing more than for them to collab on a song together, it’s likely the connection was simply a coincidence.
Regardless, we cannot wait for Grande’s new track to drop, because there’s one thing we know for sure: It’s going to be yet another bona fide hit.
