Ariana Grande and Jimmy Fallon just brought back your favorite SNL Christmas sketch—with the OG cast, no less

Christmas may be less than a week away, but Jimmy Fallon and Ariana Grande wish it was Christmas today. Last night, the “Thank U, Next” singer was on-hand to bring some extra Christmas cheer to The Tonight Show, joining Fallon and his former Saturday Night Live cast mates Horatio Sanz, Chris Kattan, and Tracy Morgan in a rendition of their classic holiday song, “I Wish It Was Christmas Today.”

Holding onto Kattan’s shoulders, Grande seamlessly fit into the legendary sketch, keeping a straight-face far more successfully than Kattan, Sanz, and Fallon ever have when performing the song.

For anyone confused by Grande’s perceived lack of enthusiasm or vocals—don’t worry, it’s all part of the hilariously bonkers nature of the sketch. Fallon, Sanz, Kattan, and Morgan first debuted the simple-yet-surprisingly effective song back in 2000, with Sanz on the Backpacker guitar and lead vocals, Fallon coming through with backup vocals and keyboard sounds, Kattan serving as keyboard “stand,” and Morgan literally just swaying to the beat.

The holiday song became something of a tradition while the four were on SNL, performing it a number of times over the course of the subsequent seasons. After a long hiatus stemming from their respective departures, Fallon brought the gang back together in 2011 when he hosted the show’s holiday episode.

Clearly, not much has changed in the 18 years since “I Wish It Was Christmas Today” made its late-night debut. And we’re not complaining.
