Are You An “Orthorexic?”

There seems to be a long list of foods these days that we’re not supposed to eat. And we’ve all been at a dinner or lunch where suddenly a friend has allergies you never even knew existed. And then we have those friends who can’t eat anything on the menu, who can only go to certain restaurants, or can’t get through the day without certain supplements, those friends where a simple dinner plan can turn into a logistical nightmare.

Enter, “Orthorexia”…a term coined a few years back, referring to the unhealthy obsession with…eating healthy.

Sounds a bit silly to me, don’t you think? I mean, how healthy is TOO healthy? It seems like an oxymoron, however, I do think that healthy living is not just the result of your diet, but also a balanced lifestyle.

Yes, eating healthy takes some thought and planning, but it should not be so prohibitive that it prevents you from living your life freely and happily. While orthorexia probably won’t lead to any serious health issues, your social life with certainly take a hit…as will your dating life. How do you order a meal of organic, vegan, steamed everything, with no oil, salt, butter…or fun? No guy is going to dig that. I’m all about moderation. Healthy eating shouldn’t be stressful.

It should be noted that during the research I did on this term, a lot of great points were brought to my attention. Many of the documented cases of “orthorexia” had more to do with what is in our foods and not the calories or fat. Many of the people talked about in these articles were concerned about all of the chemicals that are being pumped in to everything we eat, or the fact that it is getting harder and harder for us to know where our food is really coming from. BOTH great points. That, my friends, is a dark rabbit hole that I am not quite ready to go down. Call me a Pollyanna if you want to…but I still want to see the good in people.

So, girls…what do you think?

Is “orthorexia” a real thing? Or are we just a super health/body/image/weight obsessed country that will come up with a fancy latin name for something… simply to give us a reason to obsess over it?
