Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society: The first full trailer for the Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot

Update, September 13th, 11:45 a.m. EDT: We finally get to hear those iconic words again: “Submitted for the approval for the Mightnight Society…” The first full trailer for the Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot just dropped, and tbh, we don’t know if we’re more excited or scared.

Are we just creeped out already or does the trailer echo the way more grown-up horror movie Scream? It opens with one Midnight Society member asking his group, “Do you like scary stories?” Except he’s asking it directly to the camera, to us.

Later, another character trolls us by saying, “Look, if the story is too scary, I can always tone it down for you.” Check out the full trailer below and see if you can handle it because, honestly, we were better at watching scary stuff when we were kids than now.

Original post, August 5th: The ’90s Nickelodeon show Are You Afraid of the Dark? made us hide under our covers for the past almost-30 years. However, we mustered enough courage to take a peek at the teaser trailer for the upcoming three-part reboot of the series. And yup, back under the covers we go.

For those who also have Are You Afraid of the Dark? dark energy seared into your brains, you obviously remember just how chilling the show was back in the day. Sorry, but American Horror Story who? Afraid of the Dark was truly ahead of its time.

The reboot follows an entirely new cast of the Midnight Society, including Sam Ashe Arnold, Miya Cech, Tamara Smart, Jeremy Taylor, and Lyliana Wray. (Sorry, but no Ryan Gosling this time around.)

According to Nickelodeon’s press release, the Midnight Society has gathered around the campfire to tell the story of the Carnival of Doom. But unfortunately, the story doesn’t just remain a story. As the group finds out during their three hour-long episodes across three nights, the Carnival of Doom is actually very real.

The teaser trailer definitely gives us that classic Are You Afraid of the Dark? vibe. But have the scares been amped up, or is it just us?

Are You Afraid of The Dark? was my introduction to the horror genre and made me a fan for life,” reboot co-writer BenDavid Grabinski told Entertainment Weekly on August 3rd. “I hope we’re lucky enough to have our series do the same. It’s going to be a fun and scary ride, and I’m honored to introduce the Midnight Society to a whole new generation of kids.”

The Nick reboot was initially supposed to coincide with a Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie; however, while the three-episode reboot will officially hit Nick in October, the film’s release will be postponed for an undisclosed amount of time.

But, hey—as long as an AYAOTD? movie on its way, we don’t mind waiting.

Check out Are You Afraid of the Dark? when it hits Nickelodeon this fall, and be prepared to have nightmares for another 30 years.
