All the applause for Rihanna’s new college scholarship program

Rihanna is doing huge things with the Clara Lionel Foundation — the nonprofit she founded in honor of her grandparents. Since 2012, the organization has been working hard to, “improve the quality of life for communities globally in the areas of health, education, arts and culture,” according to their website. And now, via an exclusive in USA Today, Rihanna announced a global scholarship program which will provide scholarships to students attending college in the U.S.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be from Barbados, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Guyana, Jamaica, or the United States and must have already been accepted to an accredited four-year university in the United States.

The program offers scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $50,000. And they won’t cut off payment if the student doesn’t receive a degree in four years — as is the case with many other scholarship programs. The CLF funding is renewed until a bachelor’s degree is earned. That sort of realistic outlook on the challenges of higher education is exactly what many students need to be able to complete their degrees.

Applications for the scholarship are open through June 10, and students are assessed on, “academic performance, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, and a personal essay.” You can apply here.

Rihanna’s philanthropic involvement has been impressive over the years. When the Clara Lionel Foundation was first created in 2012, it helped establish the Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados. Rihanna lost her grandmother to pancreatic cancer, and has since been committed to help improve cancer treatment in the Caribbean.
