Apparently, this is the color of 2017 and we are in love

With 2017 right around the corner, everyone has got New Year vibes on the brain. As a result, the folks at Benjamin Moore were hard at work deciding the color of 2017. The lucky hue ended up being Shadow 2117-30, “an elusive and enigmatic…master of ambience.” Shadow is a deep purple, reminiscent of the infamous eggplant emoji that many of us overuse on a daily basis. Whereas last year’s color was stark white, this is a dark hue that will fill any space with a stylishness that’s also a bit spooky.

Ellen O’Neill, Creative Director at Benjamin Moore explained why Shadow has been deemed the color of the year. He said, “It ebbs and flows with its surroundings, and light brings it to life. Rich, royal amethyst can fade into the soft lilac-grey of distant mountains or morph into lustrous coal. Indulge your mysterious side. Let Shadow set the mood.”

Well when you put it that way, Shadow sounds undeniably swoon-worthy. Because it is so dark, it may be a hard sell in many homes. Without a lot of natural lighting, Shadow could create an eery vibe that some may not enjoy. In fact, O’Neill encourages the color-shy to try out shadow as a trim in a room or over a small area like a mantel. But for those who are looking for a bit of drama and rock-and-roll in their homes? Benjamin Moore’s Shadow is a lovely choice.

In case you’re wondering how these colors are chosen each year, the secret is out. Benjamin Moore’s color specialists “determine trends through forecasting research and culture-seeking style safaris that take them around the globe,” according to their website. Sounds like a pretty nice gig, eh?

As with any creative endeavor, picking a color to embody an entire year is a rather tough feat. We are sure many homeowners and design enthusiasts will love Shadow, but for those that don’t — you can always hold out for Pantone’s color of the year.
