This new study claims that microwaving your tea is actually healthier for you

You don’t have to be British to enjoy a hot cup of tea. Whether you’re in the camp of chamomile, early grey or green, you’re probably used to using a kettle to heat up your cuppa. And although we’ve been taught this is the “correct” method, science may just have proved us wrong because according to this new study tea is actually healthier when you microwave it. Record scratch.

Dr. Quan Vuong, a scientist at the University of Newcastle whose specialty is in finding ways to “add value” to natural products, discovered that microwaving tea actually releases 80 percent of the caffeine, theanine, and polyphenol compounds in the drink.

This is an increase from what would be released if you simply heated your tea up on the stove. And since theanine is an amino acid that helps with stress relief, and polyphenols are antioxidants with connections to reducing inflammation, fighting signs of aging and helping with healthy blood-sugar and blood-pressure levels, microwaving your tea seems like a no brainer! If you want to reap the benefits, simply follow Vuong’s method. Combine your hot water and tea bag in your preferred cup, microwave on half-power for 30 seconds and then let the cup sit for one minute. This method reaps the same benefits as drinking three cups of tea!

And if you still aren’t convinced, Vuong claims that microwaving your tea will also make it more delicious. So thank you, science?
