Anne Hathaway’s tribute to George Michael may be one of the most beautiful reflections on loss we’ve ever read

A huge number of celebrities have shared heartwarming messages of remembrance and sadness over the death of pop icon George Michael. And Anne Hathaway’s recent George Michael tribute on Instagram has truly moved us — and in some ways has made us think about grief in an entirely new way.

We’ve read a ton of posts and messages about all sort of life moments on social media, and if we’re entirely honest, it’s genuinely truly rare to find something that actually inspires or brings comfort during times of sadness — as well-intentioned as so many messages out there are.

But Hathaway achieved something both poignant and meaningful with her post:

"We have had to mourn so many legends this year...Remember, their light can never go out if it helped you find your own."

We genuinely think this is one of the most beautiful sentiments we’ve ever heard about loss, and we absolutely couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

There have been so very many moving messages about the loss of Mr. Michael the past few days. Some of the most heartbreaking, of course, come from those who were closest to him. His partner, Fadi Fawaz, released a statement today. “I want people to remember him the way he was. He was a beautiful person,” Fawaz wrote.

Another lovely message came from Sam Smith, who broke his nearly year-long social media silence to pay tribute to George yesterday.

"@GeorgeMichael, Words can't express how much you and your music meant and means to me. Please play his music as loud as you can today..." he wrote.

George Michael was 53 years old, and reportedly passed away peacefully in his home. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
