Anne Hathaway described a major Met Gala wardrobe malfunction, and we get it, girl

The 2019 Met Gala has come and gone, but it’s left us with the memories of some gloriously campy outfits. As in years past, the 2019 event was full of glitz and glam, and the stakes with its “Camp” theme were even higher. But even fashion’s biggest night involves occasional slip-ups. Anne Hathaway recently revealed that she had a major wardrobe malfunction at a past Met Gala.

Hathaway appeared on the May 7th episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote her upcoming movie, The Hustle. There, she explained that while she wasn’t at this year’s event, she can still vividly recall her personal nightmare from a previous year.

"One year, I was going as the guest of Calvin Klein and Francisco Costa," Hathaway told Colbert. "I was about a block away from the Met, and I was like, 'Wow, this ama—achoo!' and I sneezed, and my dress split. Like just straight-up split open."

She added that she felt “terrible” for the designer (Costa) and tried to convince him to let her walk the red carpet anyway—with her arm held down to cover the rip until they could fix it. However, Costa insisted that they find a seamstress to repair the gown. After Hathaway was sewn back into her dress (literally moments before the event began), they managed to squeak in just ahead of Rihanna (aka the Met Gala’s unofficial queen).

"So apparently, the only rule you really can't break at the Met ball is you cannot show up after Rihanna," Hathaway joked. "That's just gauche."

Watch Hathaway tell the whole story here (it starts at about 2:40).

While we may never know what it’s like to attend the Met Ball, we definitely do know the instant panic of a sudden wardrobe malfunction. Because some things are just universal.
