Anne Hathaway just opened up about being too old for Hollywood (for the record, she’s 32)

Anne Hathaway has been a part of our lives for 15 years now, ever since she completely stole our hearts in The Princess Diaries back in 2001. Since then, she’s got on to have an incredible film career, starring in rom-coms, superhero movies, and even a musical — and she snagged her first Oscar for that last one. In 2015, she should have a pretty long film career still ahead of her, right? RIGHT? Wrong. According to Hathaway, she’s already being passed over for younger actresses. And she’s 32.

I know. I KNOW. This world we’re living in is a crazy, strange place. Talking to Glamour UK, Hathaway opened up about the fact that even now, as still a young, talented and beautiful woman, she’s overlooked for roles that are given to younger actresses — even though Hathaway herself is still very young. On the other hand, though, Hathaway, she can see the other side of it, having once been that young up-and-coming actress herself.

“I can’t complain about [younger actress being cast] because I benefited from it. When I was in my early twenties, parts would be written for women in their fifties and I would get them,” she explained, “And now I’m in my early thirties and I’m like, ‘Why did that 24 year old get that part?’ I was that 24 year old once, I can’t be upset about it, it’s the way things are.”

It’s sad that’s how things are going in Hollywood right now, but at least Hathaway isn’t going to take this as defeat. So she might lose a part to someone ten years younger than her every now and then, but at long as she is still able to find roles that excite her, she’s going to be fine.

“All I can do right now is think that thankfully [I] have built up perhaps a little bit of cachet and can tell stories that interest [me] and if people go to see them [I’ll] be allowed to make more.”

Ageism in Hollywood isn’t going to disappear anytime soon. Hathaway isn’t going to disappear anytime soon, either. We’ve still got thirty, forty, maybe even FIFTY more years with her as one of our favorite leading ladies, and as long as she keeps doing what she’s doing, we’re still going to follow her wherever she goes, no matter what age.
